As some of you might be aware I've been without a set of fun wheels for a little while now. It's a long and dull story but I managed to leave myself without a job for 2 months, so the Boxster had to go.

However, after nearly 11 months out of full-time work, I'm starting full-time again at the start of November. So it seems only fair to treat myself to some new wheels!

After driving an ST and reading the long term review in EVO, I'd had my heart set on a Focus RS, which comes in at the princely sum of as near as dammit £30k! eek

So I pointed this out to a mate of mine who pointed me in the direction of a tidy 3.4 Carrera (996) for about £19k.

No my question is this, should I follow my heart and tie myself down to the Focus for a few years or go back to Porsche ownership? I've loved Cosworth's for years and have always wanted one and to be honest the Focus lights my fire more than the 911. However, is it worth the extra money over the 911?!

Should you want to confuse me further, feel free to suggest cars under £20k. However, they must conform to the following rules:
  • Must be at least a 2+2
  • No Caterfield type cars
  • No TVR's (Sorry frown )

Out of your current favourites I'd much rather spend my money on a tidy 996 than a brand new Focus RS. Although I'm not a massive fan of the 996.

R34 GTR is a good shout.

M3 will be a good one for that money, I agree with Nigel.

3.4 early 996 could be a bag of ste.

Why do you say that? Are you suggesting it might be a dog rather than a fundamentally bad car?

Look around for engine / seal failures on the 3.4, I've been keeping an eye on early 996 prices and I'm convinced there's a reason they're now so cheap and cheaper than 993s. I'd rather have a TVR at least you expect it to break and it's a known cost to fix most of the time.

I ran a Boxster (986) for 2 years and did plenty of research before buying one, so I'm well aware of the RMS issue and how it's been blown out of proportion on the 'net.

I'll add that any car of that nature will be checked out before I buy it.

I don't think it's been blown out of all proportion, 993s didn't break as a whole, 996s can and do and cost a fortune to put right.

If you're going in with your eyes open then get a 996, I'd like something like this not a really early one: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1273323.htm however I'd still want a warranty with it.

I disagree about the RMS issue, but anyway. That one you linked to is nice, but too much and the red leather in the 'flesh' is horrific. Looks like a chicken tikka exploded inside the car!

I was looking for a black with black, but that age / C4s is the one I'd want not a cheaper older one, well that was the conclusion I came to anyway.

How about a 6 series?

No, I don't like the 6. Bit too 'hairy chest wig' for me, if that makes sense.

Megane - I've quite like, the F1 would be the choice, but I'm never sure how well they wear
M3 - Is tempting, not sure I like the image though
S2000 - Tried on before buying the Boxster, found it too narrow and not that much of a fan of the car

If you really like the Focus RS, then may I suggest the Focus RS?

No point in getting a "dream car" Porker if it isn't *your* dream biggrin

Just to add an Italian option:

Alfa Brera 3.2V6 4WD (so most power goes to the back wheels as well as it looking nice): http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1317185.htm

RMS is one of a few serious 996 problems. The point is that if you get a car which has had an RMS replaced in the past it is likely to need it again in the future - the engine casings don't line up properly. If you find a highish mileage 996 (50k+) which doesn't have the RMS issue and hasn't in the past then it's not likely to in the future.
The way to avoid this problem of course is to buy a high mileage car with a known history, or buy a 964 bottom end (i.e. 996 GT2, GT3, or turbo).

But i digress. If the Focus floats your boat then buy it UNLESS you're worried about the money.

If you buy a £30k Focus it'll be worth half that if you're lucky in three years time.
If you spend a little less money on something like an E46 M3 CSL (as opposed to a normal M3) then you'll lose a lot less money. Or you could spend mid to high teens on a normal M3.

£25k on a second hand motor, especially in the one to three year old sector, is a VAST array of cars.

Do you like cab(riolet)s, do you prefer FWD or 4WD or RWD, do you do many trackdays or much european travel, do you need four seats?
