Right then, I need a daily driver as the Clio is simple too much of a cheese eating surender monkey, and is broken again!

I have been looking at
BMW
530D
530i
540i

Heres the basics,
-upto £4k Cash
-good motorway cruiser
-resonable fuel economy, redundancy motor..
-something that wont break when I look at it
-slight hoon potential, but not required
-dont do french stuff
-never keen on the J cars either.
-will look nice next to an M3
-sub 10 years old.

Im was gonna buy a 530d today but its gone so what does the Sociable SAS creative have for me?

Waits with trepid breath and throbbing heart to see whats on offer from the good men...... (and women) hehe

ETA - What ever it is if its a diesel, it will be visited by Simon at Emaps yes

what do we think of this?

Very nice, apart from the fuel consumption. Given your criteria i think the 530i would fit nicely.

e39 5's are very different dynamically than the 3's and more fragile on the reliability. Nowhere near as chuckable and slower; especially mid-range...

Knowing intimately how you like to drive Dave, i reckon you'd be bored with a 5 fairly quickly. hehe

If you want fuel economy, how about an LPG converted V6 Merc?

A very valid point, however, despite the recent escapades I am actually looking for a car that will not umm "encourage" me so much this is purely a beast to go to job interviews and get me to social events (quickly) hehe

Well im gonna fix the Clio and see what comes up over the comming weeks, I like the idea of a 530D, and that 328 is loverly might have a look at the weekend!

The Mercs a bit too daddy wagon for me cheers Andy!

what else have we?

Dave - i had a similar thought a few years ago which is why i bought that 330d, but the fact is that when it's in you to drive a certain way you can't just tell yourself not to, you end up throwing around a 330d SE (auto!) like it's a 911, and it doesn't like that!! smile

Don't kid yourself into thinking that if you buy a slow car you'll drive slowly, because you won't...

I know but I'd rather be doing 120leptons with 30mpg in a BMW with people realising im behind them, than being deafened in the clio and endlessly having to go around people.

I also have to accept that I only have 2 more pay cheques that are confirmed so a little cost saving on the fuel front will pay for a few more beers.

The target M3 will be the play car in 2010... fingers crossed.... and this will be used to keep the mileage off it.

Cheers guys

As long as its got FSH then it should be ok, you can tell a lot by how the drivers seat looks on these though, there was a S plate 540 tourer that went through BCA yesterday with a purported 90k on it, shame the drivers seat had done double!!

At 2k that'll be a good buy, at 4k on AT I'd walk away.
