Right, the provisionally Swift sold yesterday, so I'm looking for a cheaper replacement.

I'm set on an Mx-5 1.8, but lets see what else you think I should get for £3k. Only real limitation is insurance.

Something like a 200sx will probably be a killer on insurance.

MR2?

Yeah I think both the MR2 and 200sx would be uninsurable. I do like these, but again insurance would be an issue: http://pistonheads.com/sales/1496386.htm

Have you tried getting any quotes, I've been looking around and had a few surprises. For example an e39 M5 of similar value and age is cheaper to insure for me than a 3.0 z4 which just doesn't add up for me.

It's a sign! thumbup

Robbie, for a while I was looking at a 2.8 V6 Coupe but for a laugh I decided to get a quote for insuring the S2 and it was much cheaper.

As Ben said, get some quotes and you may find yourself a quick and cheap car to insure. smile

Not really, I'm thinking of being 'sensible' at the moment so don't read into that.

I love the 2.2 VTi Prelude. You can prob pick up a later one (with 200bhp instead of 185) for £1.8k to £3k. Not sure how much the insurance would be though...

I got offered a rather nice barge for little money the other day if you want to PM / email. Warning: it is VERY sensible though smile

Pray tell.......the BMW is off this week. No more pink champagne.....

Good luck with the insurance, although i think luck is the smallest component on whether an insurance company gives a flying....

yes but on hoons it was never really using any less power than 125bhp biggrin You know the saying, it's not the size that counts it's what you do with it!

There is a nice 330ci that I've seen that if everything works out I'll get it keep it for 6-12 months and decide what I really want to get after that.

What are you getting then sir, decided to do the right thing and buy David's Chim?

I actually went car shopping with a friend of mine a couple of years ago with the notion that she'd probably end up with the MX5 - but we went out and drove several similar cars and only afterwards went for a coffee and discussed what we thought of the cars (so as not to influence each other).

We both agreed the little mid-engined MR2 has sod all luggage space but was a much more taught car to drive.

I know the accepted wisdom is the MX5 and for lots of people that's probably the way to go, but for me it was the little soft top MR2.

(As an aside, the 140 engine in the MR2 and the 140/190 engines in the Celica are effectively the same units - so the easy way to upgrade the MR2 is to find a Celica 190 engine and ECU and just swap them out...)

Can you pick up those MR2 for £3k? EVO really rate them. Guy I bought my Elise from owned one previously and loved it too. I've seen a couple about in a light metallic green which looks really cool IMO.

Just found this as an example: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1478176.htm

Could well be. There was one round the corner from my parents house in Caversham Heights the other day.
