A friend of mine is looking to relocate to somewhere in Surrey.

His criteria are as follows:

1. Easy access to Dorking - work
2. Easy access to C.London - work
3. Must be in the catchment area for very good boys schools starting from the age of 4 and upwards

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Is he driving or public transport to Dorking/London or a mix?

Maybe Dorking is the obvious answer here...

I would say public transport to London definately.

Dorking could be either.

Any good schools in Dorking?

Personally I would live somewhere like Oxted, to the east of Dorking. Fast trains into the City - I lived there from 1995 - 2000 and really miss it.

I reckon that all the major Surrey towns: Dorking/Guildford/Reigate etc. have good schools.

Epsom - schools and two sets of trains to London - expensive in the town centre & nice bits.
Leatherhead and Chessington are good value.

I live in Leatherhead, and sounds ideal for your requirements!

How much cash has he got?

Because he might be forced to live in chessington, or if he is a bit more flush we can tell him to take a look into oxshott biggrin

This friend: is he a decent sort? Or does he eat peas with a knife? Will help us guide his choice...

Ha ha so you can decide whether you want him living in the same area as you?

Yes he is a decent chap and family and not unrulely chav with misbehaving children.

He is not extremely flush - probably because he has two young children. So value for money is key here.

State schools are OK if they are very good, though private is OK if the choice is limited. At the moment the eldest is at private.

I was only kidding, us Surrey types have a reputation (for snobbery) to uphold...

Avoid places like Woking as the chav count can be pretty bad...

Generally, smaller places are nicer places in my humble opinion, but there is obviously more life in the bigger towns.

Reigate is nice, and commutable... Redhill is a bit more like Woking wink

Well I am a Surrey man myself, so I don't want people coming in lowering the value of the area and my mansion.

Dorking itself, Leatherhead, Ashstead. All close enough to the countryside, all have access to excellent schools, good communications to London, enough local pubs to keep anyone happy, easy access to major shopping in Guildford and Kingston, loads of restaurants, etc, etc. Leatherhead station is on both Guildford and Horsham lines so trains to Victoria and Waterloo every 15 minutes (same applies to Ashtead).

If funds are substantial then Esher, Oxshott, Cobham areas.

how i can concur!!!

The surrounding villages are reasonable.. But with the mass over development of new infill housing estate taking over there is no longer a border between villages.

How is Croydon these days wink
Actually, I was there yesterday. Not by choice, obviously. I can confirm that it is still very much a godforesaken armpit of a hellhole. I strongly advise you to avoid.

(there, was that snobby enough smile?)

Currently living in Bramley, just to the south of Guildford and its a very nice place indeed......even being a scutter from the Midlands i have to admit Surrey has a lot to offer. Guildford is by far the best option, just make sure you stay south of the A3 otherwise you may be dissapointed.

Godalming is also very good, however might be a bit cross-country to get to Dorking, i wouldnt imagine any of the schools around these parts are particularly bad smile

I'm in West Ewell.

33 minutes direct to Waterloo in one direction, 17 minutes direct to Dorking in the other, and a 3 minute walk to the station. Epsom station also goes direct into Victoria and London Bridge if you need them.

In decent traffic, the M25 is about a 10 minute drive, as is the A3, and Dorking is about 20 minutes.

For boys, Glyn Technology School was rated outstanding on its Ofsted report last year, with no individual aspect dropping below good. We're just hoping it's as good when our boys reach secondary school age (eldest is currently 4) as we're safely in the catchment area, but a friend of my wife is moving from the other side of Epsom to make sure that her eldest (currently 7) will get a place.

Chav population is limited, although it does increase as you move away from Ewell towards Chessington.

A 3 bed semi would sell for around £320k or so.
