Help JonRB lose his virginity
Discussion
Ok, ok, my bangernomics virginity.
I've pretty much closed a contract with a previous client but it's a 100 mile round trip (95% motorway) and I don't really want to be putting that kind of mileage on either of my cars.
I know the general gist of bangernomics (buy cheap, don't get attached, fix simple stuff or sell / scrap it if beyond economic repair) but I don't have a clue where in Thames Valley & Surrey to source suitable cars, nor enough nouse to tell a lemon from a peach, or the ability to drive two cars at once making collecting a new purchase a bit difficult.
Are any SASers able to give me any help, ideas, pointers, recommendations, or anything?
I was thinking that £500-£750 may be a reasonable budget, and something of the size of a small exec (A4, Laguna, Mondeo) rather than a small car would be suitable for motorway munching.

Can be taxed at your expense if you wish.

Seems like peanuts for a car like that though.Sods Law said:
I'm about to start a 100 mile a day commute and may consider a second motor but Im tempted by a bike.....
Me too. Taking my test on Friday! Doing more miles than you too. This thread interests me though as I'll be getting a second car for the winter. Had planned a shed but the car scheme for my new job pays me more to be 'Green' - VED Band A-C will get me max allowance per month. So perhaps a newer car is the way to go. Still to look at my options. More interested in picking up a bike right now

Hmmm. I quite like this idea. Even though it's not what I thought I wanted.
I'm considering buying Adi an A-Class 170 CDi Avantgarde Manual and borrowing it monday to thursday
My reasons
50+mpg
Resonably comfortable
tall seating for traffic "out Manuouvering"
many examples wilth over 120k (im looking at 90k)
Good residuals
Cheap as it gets to buy
Interestingly her shopping list is quite different
Silver ot Black as its "cute"
Must Be a MK1 as its urrrm "cute"
Not that black leather as its too dark....
Parking thingies would be nice
Cant I have a S2000 instead...
Either way makes it an apealling option, wonder how theses fair at the Auction house...

Good call, it can also stretch to fun cars if you are not to concerned about the mpg.
If you want utter cheapness then the mk3 Golf TDI is a peach - cheap to buy and so cheap to run, also quiet and comfy. My house mate uses one everyday.
Mk2 Golf GTI (which I bought for £700) and adored. Such a good car to drive and very cheap - my first cheap car that went to the Ring
MK2 MR2. I got one for £600 and took it to the Ring
although I didn't get on well with that cars handling and promptly got rid of it.
Other options are BMW 320i E36 (318 upwards depending on your budget) - I got a 328i Coupe last year for £1200!! Bargain. Oddly that also went to Germany
GOod luck!!
