We took an S60 D5 down to lemans 4 up full to the brim with gear and didn't see much below 100 the way down thanks to Dave and it returned about 50mpg all the way. Most comfortable car I've sat in, and that includes Daves old Omega. although the omega was lovely! and the V6 sounded lovely.

Re the skoda superb, check out the seats first, as im not sure but they may not be the most comfortable.

Yep S60 D5 could be great, they are very comfortable and got a good stereo if you can find one that's not a skip for the money

I'm actually selling my mum's S60 at the moment. It's out of your budget and won't get anywhere near 40mpg but i can say that it's very comfortable, very reliable, has amazing seats, a great stereo, excellent climate control, more airbags than a lowrider convention and plenty of rear seat and boot space for when you need those.
If you can get a D5 for £2k i think you'll struggle to find something better for the cash.

Don't limit yourself to the S60 though, the S70/V70/S80 should be comparable.

I think the Volvo is the way to go for sure. No-one has a bad word to say about it yet, unlike most other things which have views from both sides. Time for an Autotrader hunt tonight to see what i get at various prices

The 6 month update has been added to the above thread.

2 cars tried and tested since June when starting the original car hunt, and it's a happy ending

Sadly

Last 3 weeks... 1250, 1110, 1370

It will calm down once I get sorted, with the plan to be flying down every second week. It unbelievably comfy and effortless to drive though. 5 hours in really crap weather and a couple of traffic patches from Glasgow to 'Down South' ( ) and I got out not even feeling slightly worn out or sore. It's the first car I can honestly say that about.

It might not be the best for hooning around Scotland, but it's definitely the best for getting there non-stop, quickly, and in proper comfort

Tonight, I'm heading to London for a meeting tomorrow. This time on the Caledonian Sleeper. Leaves Glasgow at 11.30pm, has a bed to sleep in, and arrives at 6.40am in London

Wednesday meetings, Wednesday night dinner and drinks, Thursday 1st Class train home for 5 hours (and will even get some work done on the way!). Not too bad a way to travel this week

BTW, the Sleeper train (booked today for tonight) was only £88. I was very happily surprised.

First class ticket home on Thursday was £110.

I found the same for High Speed covering of big distances the D5 S60 is pretty Awesome, Dads did Le Mans very effectively, Glad you like it Fraser.

Im going to try the 330 again over the comming weeks.... Bye Bye Bora in December.

Surely this is as, if not more, cost effective than driving? Not to mention the time/hassle benefits. Or do you need to drive to different work destinations sometimes?

London is generally just for Quarterly company meetings or 'company socialising'.

Normally my weekly plan means I need to call via a couple of clients while I am heading to or from the Maidenhead office. My client list consists of Theale, Basingstoke, Poole, Daventry, Crewe, and Newcastle. I was travelling to this same list when I was in Ascot, which is how the Comfy Diesel Cruiser hunt started
