Cheap first car

Hi chaps (and chappeses).. I thought I'd ask my favourite group of knowledgable car peeps.

I've got a friend in Epsom who's Mrs has just passed her test and they're looking for a cheap suitable first car.. Corsa, Micra, Polo, Ka sort of thing. Not sure on budget but under £1k, small-ish and cheap to insure only real requirements..

Puma's are great cars!!

Just fast enough (ie OK of overtaking), great steering, ford parts (ie costs) aging very well.

Got one ot do up then may well be for sale (but g/f does not want to sell it!)

I'd avoid a Puma, the insurance would be quite high for her as a new driver. Plus Pumas will have had harder lives than many cheap hatchbacks as they are sporty little coupes and driven as such. My daughter is 25 and when she passed they wouldn't insure her on my stroen Xsara Coupe diesel!

Ford KA is a great choice. Simple, cheap to run, fun to drive, loads around, etc. Fiesta is also good for the same reasons. Key thing is to get one with a new MoT. Anything else is a bonus. You may be surprise at what you can get.

I thought Puma's might be a bit tough for insurance for a mid 20's female with new license..

I'll keep looking for him, Him (& her) haven't much clue about cars so trying to help..

That's interesting as my brother bought his because of the cheap insurance when he lost his no claims and as a 23 year old this was painful?

But hey what do I know.

If you do look at a Ka, check for rust around the bottom of the A pillar, and the rear of the sills, I have seen loads that have had bodged repairs to on the A pillar so be doubly careful. Looked at one last week on a 02 plate, pushed my thumb straight through the repair...

K11 Micra servicing costs are peanuts cam chain so no belt to worry about capable of covering stupidly high mileage as long as oil changes are kept up.
