I'm selling my Civic to make way for a family car and currently have a personalised registration on it. It looks like there'll be a £105 retention fee if I want to be able to take the plate off of the car and use it on another. Is there any other way I can do this as I haven't had to do it before?

Thanks

Neil

No. Had to do it a few times. Just take the relevant documents into your local DVLA centre and they can do it there and then, putting the car back to its original plate. Generally takes 30 minutes at Sidcup DVLA, about 4 hours at Wimbledon!

that includes the re assignment fee,

Unless you have another car to put it on you have to retain to re allocate.

Are you trading in? as you could transfer at a DVLA office on the way as long as you still have the original plates?

Or buy the car before you sell?

The trouble is, it takes up to two weeks to get the V5 back with the proper reg number.
I use Theale DVLA office, who are pretty good

I stupidly left my plate on a car when I sold it 3 years ago as the guy wanted the car there and then rather than waiting for the docs to get back, regretted it ever since frown

I can second that for Wimbledon... the amount of times Ive got in trouble with the boss after using all my lunch hour plus a whole lot more sat waiting to sort out documents for my numberplate!!

And yes, OP, you do just have to stump up the cash im afraid!!

Ok, decided to go the route of getting the number plate transferred to the wife's car. Not that many offices near me and they are only open during work hours in the week so it's going to be tricky getting to one!

Which office would you use if based in Guildford, I guess Theale (Reading) would be best, it must have moved as I think it used to be in the town centre...
