Focus Diesel

[MX-5 Lazza]

I'm looking to replace my ageing 1999 Focus 1.8 Zetec petrol soon and have been considering a newer 115bhp 1.8 diesel Focus but on searching ads I see they also do a 110bhp 1.6 diesel that appears to have more torque than the 1.8.
Does anyone out there have any experience with either or preferably, both that could pass on any knowledge/advice?

This will be of no help but we had a fleet of diesel focusesses/foci in about 2000, I'm assuming they were the lower powered ones as they were the cheapest we could get from the fleet company. They were fab and the engine had plenty of torque albeit a fairly short band of it, would happily tool along the motorway at a ton and returned amazing MPG. It was fairly loud but apparently the engine is very strong. And even the diesel estates would evenly four wheel drift on wet roundabouts, brilliant devices.

If you're comparing 1.6 and 1.8 TDCi engines i assume you're looking at mk2 Foci? The 1.8 115bhp is the engine from the mk1 facelift Focus (the engine in my car). I like it, its pokey enough to hold its own on the motorway. The Ford-quoted 51mpg is lies though (i get around 45-47mpg with mixed driving). It's a relatively smooth engine for its age compared to VAG TDis of the same vintage, but aren't anywhere near as tuneable (if you're into that).

Supposed weak points are DMF failures (mine's fine and is at 54k, i know of another with much higher miles and is also fine). Which are'nt cheap to repair

Can't speak for the 1.6 TDCi engine, but it's a joint Ford / PSA development and so i assume quite different to the 1.8 in all but name.
