I need some help/ advice please, and somewhere locally in TV&S to get the RROD sorted...

I have done a couple of these, thing to remember is that once they overheat and RROD occurs they can be tempermental after. One of the ones I fixed worked fine for 6 months and has gone again....
The Xclamp fix actually involves:
Open the case up
remove the 2 'xclamps' from under the motherboard which hold the two heatsinks down.
remove the heatsinks and clean up the base of them and the top of the CPU and GPU
new thermal paste onto the two faces.
refit the heatsinks but use 8 small bolts instead of the clamps - the head size is very important, some kits on Ebay come with normal bolt heads which work but you will need to drill the base of the case to give them room. You want lowprofile heads. Also the washers in some kit are a fraction big and can short.... be careful!!
When fitting the bolts ensure that the heatsink is level and the bolts are not to tight - seems odd but a slight overtighten and the troublsome one I had RROD again, loosen it and all was fine. I think that gap between the board and the base of the heatsink should be an even 1mm (but that is from memory so google it)
Use and air duster to clean everything out - they get coated in dust which doesnt help.
Follow the instructions carefully with regard to letting it overheat a while as you need to ensure the unit doesnt powerdown whilst flashing its warning. One of the chips has a sensor that needs to remain cooled whilst letting the other overheat. Check online for which way round this is!!
Opening it up can be done carefully without needing a fancy tool, I use a very small flat headed screwdriver. Since it was for me and cost £10 on ebay I was not to bothered about slipping!! So its your choice.

I watched a youtube vid of how to do this, and it looks to be not too bad a process provided I get the right bits. Firstly I get to pull it to pieces for fun, and then if I completely knacker it I can buy a new one anyway

RROD fixes can work - as I said the one I currently has lasted 6 months, I have another also which is fine still. The only reason I dont use it / sell it is that I may have accidently broken the DVD drive!
It is worth a go and if you do it properly then it can work for fair while. If nothing else you can then save some cash to get a new one !!
