M4 standing water

Just a quick heads up for those lucky enough to be driving along the river that used to be known as the M4 this morning.

Between 8/9 and 7 there is a huge amount of standing water in the outside lane, so go careful down there!

Water seemed to be okay, however the traffic was ste again this morning!

Everyday this week, what the hell is going on.

It was standstill for ages at jnct 10 and then no accident or anything to show for it.

I think it's everyone back at work and all trying to get in for the same time + the weather, which probably means it's just going to stay dreadful. Can't wait until I don't need to use the M4 anymore!

Ah, but won't you then be coming near Reading?!?! Nightmare at the moment. I'm choosing to invest my valuable resources in lie-ins rather than squander my time sat in early AM rush hour traffic....

Good point Neil, however hopefully the A329m won't be too bad... I'll find out in 2-3 weeks!

I'm also starting to think of getting the train in if it works out to allow me to drink after work when I want

Good luck with the parking in/around Oracle, it's not a visit i relish.....on the plus side, i guess that means you'll be local for 'lunches'

and you know the non-car status makes sense given the free bus into town and the MIX happy hours.....

I'm allowed, if you'd care to take a look at 'my garage' you'll see how much I've already spent on the cause over the past few years, my wallet deserves a rest.

The standing water from J5 to J10 is a real issue and has been reported several times to the HA that I know of, the central reservation drains are full of vegetation and need clearing out and I know there is a project to carry out this work during the first quarter of 2011.

The traffic issues are usually from J10 eastbound and its usually due to the volume of traffic entering onto the main carriageway, but if people allowed "zip feeding" then the traffic would flow beautifully.
Another main sticking point is J8/9 where people jump the lights on amber and then have to stop due to the traffic build up in the middle of the lanes which stops the round-a-bout and that in turn backs up onto the main carriageway...
Other places are J4b M25 interchange, people trying to push in at the last minute stops lane one and the feeder lane running as others break and this in turn backs up past Slough and onto Maidenhead.

If there was a little driving courtesy it's my opinion that many of the issues wouldn't happen...

I work just near there and I don't entirely agree. The junction design is st I can't see any reason why there shouldn't be an M4 (eastbound) -> A404 lane like there is from the A404->M40 and then it would probably solve most of the issues at the junction as it would remove a lot of traffic from the roundabout. The light phasing has been buggered about with a few times over the years and I'm pretty sure they only take into account the junction when it's quiet, which is nice.

Terrible weather around Swindon at the moment. Just got back and there's patches of heavy rain and plenty of standing water.
