For the climbers amongst us (of which I'm not one); the Reading Climbing Centre opens on the 5th of march.

May pop along and have a nosey "complimentary food and drinks" sound exceptionally good to me ........... I may have to have an attempt at the speed climb.

I've already been there a couple of times! It's a really good setup and they have loads of space!
I'd be going more regularly but I seem to have f**ked up my shoulder

Starting to make Swindon's link centre (my usual haunt) look like good value!

Prices sound about right for a new centre. Craggy is around that price. What is the Swindon place like in comparison?

Swindon is £7.50 for non local residents. Undercover Rock in Bristol is £6 - £7.50 depending on times. Depending on how well they maintain it, it might be worth the extra cost. My biggest gripe with indoor centres is poor cleaning and maintenance so hopefully they'll get it right.

Yeah; also how often they change routes.

I'd give the speed climbing a good go...too bad I work in central London and the earliest I could get down is about 8pm

That's weird - I thought it had already opened. Someone at work went...

I'm up for going when I move to Reading in the not too distant

ETA: Should have read that properly. Won't be going to the launch party but I've heard it's a good place to climb. I used to go quite a lot to Craggy Island, and if it's anywhere near as good as Craggy, it'd be a great place to go.

Sorry to drag this thread up...

I'm heading down there this evening, with a couple of mates. We are complete beginners, and are going to do some bouldering, to avoid having to do the induction course and mess around with ropes in case we don't like it.

They have said we can just turn up, and have a go - we have no knowledge whatsoever, about routes, and their colours/grades etc. Is that stuff you're supposed to know before hand, or is it easy to turn up and wing it?

It's already been open a while now, I'm a member . Launch thing looked quite cool though had no idea about it Ralph, shame it wasn't last night as I would have been able to help but I'm busy tonight. You can also get tuition/help from the guys that work there, the easiest way to go as a beginner is to have at least one
person there who can belay do you know anyone?

Ps: if anyone wants to climb with me I'm looking for someone as David has broken his leg! I'm a competent with belaying.

It was last night (thurs) that we went down. Just stayed in the bouldering area, but I think we're going to do the induction soon for the main area, as it was great fun. Not sure when we're going to do it, but if you want someone to climb with at any stage just PM me as I can see us going down quite regularly now.

Bloody hard work on the forearms/grip though, will have to get some serious training in!

Glad you enjoyed it; the best way to train for it is by climbing more!
