Anyone able to recommend a car that I can pick up for approx £1k-3k that is suitable to do 35k in?

requirements are, 30mpg+, not breakdown every 5 mins be able to get a bike in the back and a tow bar fitted.

Editted as not too fused about comfort if its mildly entertaining.

Found these if anyone has any experience of them?

Not an Audi, HTH.

Focus or something Jap unless you like big bills IMO.

Fraser has had a lot of luck with Volvo's so that might be a good shout as well.

My 99 1.8 Focus Zetec has done me proud in the last 5 years. Bought it at 70k and it now has 125k miles and it's hardly cost me a thing. Coil pack and the usual tyres/brakes/oil is about it. Drives nice & smooth and handles surprisingly well. I do a 22 mile each way commute which is all B-roads so constant gear-changes and I still get 34mpg consistently. It's not quick but it's plenty quick enough for a daily drive.
