Mk2 Mondeo ST24 - any good?
Discussion
I had a year old panther black one back in 2001 & loved the look & smooth engine but it failed to set my heart on fire after my xr4x4.
I then bought a 2.5 v6 ghia x 3yrs ago which i recently sold & loved it,i think they work better as a cheap runabout.
I had no problems with the engine & it had done 120k miles no leaks & still pulled well & you can get mid 30s mpg if you take it steady.
I say go for it the st24 looks nice & offers great value now.
Good look with your search,i defo like mondys i have had 3 now!
Just looked in your profile & i ran a mk1 1.8 lx mondy for 2 years & think they are great cars comfy & practical & a good drive.
Cheers.

They are looking seriously tempting now
Performance wise, how would they compare to, say, a 323i?
And how easy / cheap is it to get a bit more power out the engine?
Unfortunately the ST200 is crazy on insurance, at least twice as much
THe 1.8 LX is a brilliant car, it is going to be difficult to part with it!

I think I would go for the Ghia X. Leather and more toys. The suspension is half a notch softer and no worse for that, chassis control and adhesion isn't reduced, but they are better on average (i.e. awful) roads.
At one time it was quite popular to put on ST200 extrusion honed upper/lower inlet manifolds, but these are difficult to find now. The twin pre-cats can be gutted without MOT fail (they are there for when the engine is warming up) and a more free-flowing exhaust is good for liberating a few more HP.

Just found one for sale that has been in storage for 3 years, and was featured on the programme "Driven"!
Seems good, it has had loads of work done and is a very reasonable price, but looking back it seems to have been for sale for ages. That said, I haven't seen it on any of the mainstream websites including this one, so maybe he is just not trying very hard to sell it? I don't blame him, it looks really nice. He has owned it for years.
Does anyone know anything about it? I am seriously tempted...

Colour? I seem to recall a green or white one that fits the bill.Seems good, it has had loads of work done and is a very reasonable price, but looking back it seems to have been for sale for ages. This one is blue, PM'd you a link to the ad
I have pretty much decided I am after one of these next, it is only £100 more on insurance (at 19 and male) than my 1.8 mk3!

£800 a year for a 2.5 V6 is pretty good IMO

I had a black 98 ST24 for a couple of years + loved the smoothness of the car. That was until i replaced it with a ST200. Far better all round car. Although only 30bhp more it feels so much quicker + the upgraded interior is also a lot better too, as is the standard body kit of the 200. My advice is if you can get a ST200 for even slightly more - go for it.
The insurance on the ST200 is more than double the ST24
Bought an ST24 yesterday, here is the thread
