First venture into Ford land for some assistance please.

My lad has just bought a 06 reg TDCI 130 zetec. Everything about the car is fine apart from the air con. When it is switched on it sounds like it is trying to climb out of the engine bay, rattling and grumbling fairly loud but still blowing cold air. Is it common for the pump to give up and rattle like this?

How easy of a job is it to change the pump and what, if anything else is required.

Certainly not normal but air on gas is dangerous and can blind you so leave it to an expert.

does it the engine make more noise on tickover and then goes quiet over 1000 rpm?
Sounds like the belt tensioner. Got to do mine on my ST.

Do a search for Mondeo crank pulley http://www.vauxhallownersnetwork.co.uk/showthread....

The engine makes its normal sound on tickover until the air con is switched on, then the rattling starts for a few seconds, goes quite for a few seconds and starts over again.
I thought about the belt tensioner but that would do it all the time, not just when the air con is switched on

Not really, when the A/C is on there would be extra load on the belt? You should be able to see when the A/C clutch is engaged on the pully.
