I take it the 03/53 plate is pre facelift/6 speed. Should I be looking for an 04 plate?

Would the ST spec automatically include front/rear quickclear screens?

'53 onward was the first facelift. That one is a facelift smile

Yep, heated front/rear screens as standard.

I have given myself a week off or untill Monday (car insurance on SORN Golf runs out) to find and buy a car. After my Golf GT TDi blew the engine/turbo I have given up on VAG and I am looking for a more reliable, easy driving fun car. Spotted this today.

Must say I had not considered a Ford but after reading up on reviews I am vey tempted to pop along and have a look. Estate would suit my life style, less than 3k miles a year suits my wallet, but before I jump in feet first is there anything I should know, be wary of or be asking?
£4k for a 2003 with 83K miles??!! I was offered £7k as a p/x, that is an 07 with every single factory option with less than 5k miles on the clock. Watch out for rusty door bottoms on anyhting <2004.

Sounds like a good price to me if it's in good condition overall

No.

Just an easy drive from Norwich to Kent with the odd foot down moment, between 65-70ish mph. After sitting in the queue for Dartford for an hour, and driving back, with the much cooler evening air too much of a temptation, I still managed 30.5mpg overall.

Anyone that says these cars are juicy either A) Doesnt have one OR B)Owns but only drives it 2 miles a day. I've never found mine to be excessive for the performance on offer.

I'm just writing what I've read.
Anybody can reset their trip and fool themselves into believing they are achieving 60mpg on the motorway. I could post a picture of this up now actually.
Here's a thread on a Mondeo ST board.

Most people I believe are saying 20 odd MPG. Am I correct?!
I don't mean to come across as a douche here but just because you achieved 30mpg on average creeping past minibuses on the motorway doesn't mean somebody else will get this readout on a regular basis.
Thank you.

Most people on single-make owner's forums are stupid.

I can average 27mpg in my Mondeo driving sensibly (read: not like Miss Daisy, but not like my hair is on fire) to work and back which is half and half motorway / town. I can get 34-35mpg on a longer trip, sticking to the speed limit and driving sensibly. It's not hard, if you've got half a brain.

Of course when hooning, the average will drop dramatically. No st sherlock.

My average over the last 8000 miles is 26.8mpg. Doing a long motorway journey pushes it to around 30 but it rarely gets higher than that. I estimate it does about 24-ish around town but mine has the older 5 speed gearbox, the 6 speeds can add 2-3mpg to each of those figures. I wouldn't say it's particularly fuel efficient for its power output, BMW's 3.0 I6 is noticeably better for mpg, but then they cost more to buy in the first place.

You not correct, and you haven't listened, i drove 140 miles after resetting the trip, i did not have to drive like an old fart to achieve this, over 300 miles it averaged just over 30mpg, i will regularly brim the tank to check for accuracy and its always very close so i trust the gauge.

I've driven 20k in 18 months and its always been good on fuel, i rarely do short 5-10 mile trips in it, i bought it to drive not pose.

As an owner of the car i feel i am well qualified to post my real world findings, if you want to believe what is written elsewhere, please go ahead, i get fed up trying to tell people things, only for them to say i'm talking bks.

I have to agree with Kidders.

Around town I get 24-26mpg. On motorway runs I get into e 30s, whilst making progress.

This has not changed since I bought the car. Super Unleaded typically realises another 2mpg over the above figures.

Oh, and 49 odd people is hardly statistically significant wink

Third.

Anyone can average 35mpg out of an ST220 just by doing 70mph, if you can't then there is something wrong with the car.

Here is the result of driving from Liverpool to London and back at 70-80 most of the way, with a few litres left to go.

If you really want to drive at 55mph, then you'll achieve this.

But the StDrivers forum says you only get 20mpg???

FWIW, my is tweaked and running 255bhp so even modified they still return good figures.
