Hi,

Just been comparing 2.2 TDCI engine outputs between the MK3 Mondeo and the Mk4 Mondeo. My mk3 ST TDCI is rated at approx 155bhp with 265lbft torque. However the mk4 Mondeo 2.2 TDCI is rated at approx 175bhp and 295lbft torque.

Wondering if the engines are the same internally and if so is the difference in engine rating just down to electronics? Again, if so, would it be reasonable to assume that upping the outputs to these figures on a Mk3 wouldnt have any long term reliability issues as Ford would seem to have done this already to the mk4?

Were there ever any Ford approved power upgrade packages for this engine offered?

Any info gratefully received.

Cheers

Marty

Might just be an exercise to generate more work for dealer service departments.

It was nice to do 350,000 miles without the expense of a belt change...smile

IIRC the later engine is completely different, new management system that is much better than the old one!

Thanks for all the comments.

I have been semi-seriously looking at tuning the 155bhp motor. All the manufacturers of plug in tuning boxes seem to make nothing but good claims for them, but I am left wondering that if it was as easy as all the claims make out then why didnt Ford do something like it in the first place?

To answer my own question, I assume (probably incorrectly) its because the car had to sell globally so all the electronics covering fuelling and emmissions were set to cover the widest possible range of restrictions in any given country. If this is the case, was there ever a Ford sanctioned aftermarket diesel tuning product for sale in the UK?

Additionally as I intend to keep this car for a number of years, what do these tuning boxes (Ford sanctioned or not), or the other type of system such as Blufin do for long term reliability?

Cheers

Does the latest 2litre 140hp TDCI engine also use a cambelt or have they kept the chain???

I think I'd prefer to go the re-map route rather than a tuning box simply because it's a bespoke map to your engine/car.

In terms of long term reliability I think it also comes down to how mechanically sympathetic you are to the car. I don't think that thrashing the car when the engine, water and oil are all up to temperature will harm the car any more than when it's stock to be honest. I'd also caveat that with not thrashing the car in 1st gear either but that's my point of view).

Just my two penneth.

I have a mk3 St tdci. From what I have read the Remap is the best route. Clean the EGR valve & inlet manifold, I made a blanking plate from thin metal sheet. Otherwise it gets so gunked up & restricts your airflow. Decat/particle filter remove & fit a decat pipe(not illegal on a Diesel).

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking of going down the Bluefin route together with a larger intercooler and a de-cat pipe.

Cleaning out the EGR and inlet will definately be on the 'to do' list when I start wielding the spanners.

TBH I havent had the 'orrible plastic engine cover off to see what type of EGR valve I have, but I suspect that as the car is a 56 plate, it'll be Euro 4. If this is the case, how do I blank off the EGR without upsetting the cars ecu?

Also, what realisitc mpg will I be looking at? At the min, most of my driving is the daily commute - motorway and then through town. The car is telling me that my current average is 35mpg, however I dont hang about on the motorway which is where I think the average starts to drop.
