Need a bit of help with a 2007 Focus 1.6, specifically the rear brakes.

The car belongs to a friend, he bought it a few weeks ago. During the week once of the rear wheels locked up as he moved off the driveway. He managed to free up the drum by repeated application fo the handbrake. Once released he took the drum off, had a look, couldn't see anything obviously wrong so put it back together and called me.

When I took the drum off the adjuster came out with it. I think this is what caused the lock up, it was seized up and when the brakes were applied it moved out of alignment.
So I cleaned it up and got it working properly and did the other side too. All adjusted up, brakes work fine.

On a test drive a rubbing noise could be heard coming from rear offisde. With the drum off again it was evident that the edge of the leading brake shoe had been rubbing on the drum.

The reason for this is that where the shoe meets the piston here is a small "hat" that sits on top of the piston had partially broken up and was wedging the shoe outwards.
This "hat" has a rip in it, upon checking the other three they all do.

What is the purpose of this hat ? is it there to retain the rubber seal ?
Anyone know if they are available separately or do you have to buy a wheel cylinder ?
The car is currently back together without the damaged hat, I'm reluctant to say he can drive it until its replaced but at the same time I can't say exactly what might happen if it is driven.

Any help ?

Thanks.
