Hello,
i have become sick of the the KA's sluggishness, so im thinking turbocharger. i cannot simply get a better car unfortunately due to many reasons most of which are financial. so does anyone have any advice about what turbo might do the job, anything else ill have to replace, that sort of thing. My engine is the 1.3 sohc duratec lump.
much appreciated

Wouldn't it be more cost effective to drop another Ford engine in there that has more power already?

Would the 1.7 lump from a Puma go in?

Doing anything to the 1.3 is a waste of time. Don't bother.

You perked my interest so I hit Google:

246bhp and 270lb/ft apparently, sounds like fun smile

I guess the other (cheap) alternative would be to make what you have lighter, corner better and retain the speed you've built up. I found the Ka hire cars I've had to be a lot of fun, one of them just had wider wheels and a K&N intake, probably made it slower but it sounded fast smile

It would cost more to turbo the Ka than it would to sell it and buy a Puma 1.7.

I suspect the Puma would be cheaper to insure, too.

the reason i cant realy stick another engine in it or get a different car is that its sort of the spare family car. they wont mind a turbo though although i realise this isnt the most cost effective performance mod. i love the way the car handles, possibly gonna get some coilovers. would a fiesta rs t2 turbo do the job? that 230bhp ka is intense, that is the old engine though.

Seriously, don't. And don't even waste your time thinking about it.

Coilovers and an engine swap / turbo conversion are going to cost more than the car is worth and make insurance cripplingly expensive, assuming there are young drivers on the policy.

If you are financially challenged I would explore the effects on your insurance.

I suspect few insurers would cover this mod and if you are under 30 and I suspect you are the premiums frpm the few that will, will be more than the Ka.

That's the solution, right there.

If you wish to break the law that is your choice.

I think it is very very silly.

The consequences will be entirely of your own making.

Zetec-E conversion is becoming a more common conversion and should be relatively cheap for the performance, you can buy engine mounts off the shelf, use an normal ib5 box with ka bellhousing (I could be wrong on that one) and then the most expensive thing is the ecu. have a search on ka owners club etc.

Also there was a chap running a 1.3 turbo in a fiesta on zsoc, dont think it lasted long but might worth a look if you genuinely want to do it. Also this is obviously going to cost money but you could do the above conversion fairly cheaply by getting stuck in yourself and buying right smile

Well, get yourself a job, save some money up, and buy something better. Either that or piss a load of money that'd be far better spent elsewhere up the wall on a car that isn't yours, doing mods that you can't really afford, that'll make the insurance unaffordable. In 3-4 years do you really want to be driving a barried up Ka? If yes, go for it. If not, stick the cash somewhere for a bit, enjoy not being as skint as you would have been at Uni if you'd turbo'd your mums car, and when the time comes that you can afford to insure something with a bit more poke, buy that. Plenty of decent motors out there for under £1500.

Honestly, I've been there and done it with the 1.3 when I was younger and more stupid. Swap the lump, or save your cash. If you're swapping the lump don't forget the suspension and brakes, exhaust, ECU, loom, etc.

A Ka isn't all that slow, really - thousands of reps. stomp up and down the country with a boot full of samples in 90bhp diesels, which are no faster.
