My son has bought a 2003 with 98k on the clock.
It suffers from black smoke when changing gear.
Today we replaced the EGR valve with a new one and cleaned out the inlet box which was bunged up.
Still the same.
I took the Turbo pipe of the check that it was new but the bottom metal u pipe had black tar / thick oil substance running down it.
Any clues apart from injectors?

Hmmm. Is the turbo providing a healthy boost? Does the engine over-run at all?

If it uses a vacuum actuator on the EGR you can put a ball bearing in the actuator hose to disable it, as I did on my 04 Mk3.
