‘00Focus zetec engine issue
Discussion
Hi guys, just before the new year the coilpack went on my 1.6 focus. Managed to find a autoparts open new years eve to get the parts and changed the coilpack and plugs, under a mechanic friends advice, said the leads should be fine.
Since then the engine doesn’t feel right, if you get how I mean. Where i used to be able to ‘coast’ it now feels like the engine brak effect is really strong.
The car feels a little restricted too, almost as if the breaks are sticking. I haven’t however checked these, but it is in mind after I ran over a large piece of metal that fell of a truck on the motorway the day before the coilpack went. So could be related to the braking feeling.
Its not happening so much under acceleration but as soon as I lift off the car instantly begins to slows, did a test on the motorway the other day, held it at 70 then lifted off and was doing under 60 in 7seconds, whereas it used to gently coast for a bit before speed started dropping. (did the same test in the mrs car, 1,6 hyundai coupe, and it took almost double the time to drop under 60)
I know that all sounds a bit weird but I’m trying to work out what it may be before I have to put it into the garage and face the bill they conjure up.
Could my timing be out?
Is this how these cars drive and mines just been knackered for that long I didn’t notice
Strangely, when the coilpack went, the engine management light didn’t come on, but when I plugged a fault reader in it highlighted a misfire in Cyl 3. Should it have come on or am I thinking something out of nothing!?
Reading back over it, it looks like I’m talking crazy. But nay help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Checking to see if the brakes are rubbing would be a very easy check. Take it for spin on a duel carriageway or something where you can stay at a relatively high speed (60ish) for a period of time. Gently pull over (trying not to use the brakes) and then see if any of the wheels are hot. The rubbing brake will generate a lot of heat (kinetic energy converted to heat energy).
If you havent changed the plugs, put new ones in. if you have had a misfire on no 3 , it wont take long to foul up. Timing wont change, thats controlled by the crankshaft sensor . Changing a coil pack is just that, swopping it over.Zetecs dont like dirty plugs from experience. Also put a bit of silicon grease on the plug leads before you put them back on the plugs. Zetecs manage to track down the plugs with damp to eart and cause a misfire too.
