MK3 XR3 gearbox problems

Hi, I've a 1982 escort xr3 and I've a small problem with the gearbox. It's hard to select first gear as it is very easy to accidently put it into reverse. I have been told that it could be the syncromesh that is gone but i do not know if this is correct or not? It goes into gear easy but there is a lot of movement in the gear selection and you have to be very precise where you put the gearstick when selecting gear. Any ideas what this is? Where I can get the parts and how I go about doing so? Thanks

Does not sound like synchromesh at all.

Probably the gear selector thing under the gearlever is worn out.

There's a little spring thats probably gone AWOL, happens to most of them. You can either buy a repair kit on ebay or grab another linkage from a scrap yard if you see anything running a similar engine/gearbox
