Started the car to a nasty belt noise last night - plus smoke and a nasty smell.

The short auxiliary belt snapped very soon after.
A bit of internet searching showed that the short belt only seems to drive the aircon pump off a double pulley on the PAS pump.
Can anyone confirm this? I just want to be sure it doesn't do anything more important than that as well.

Haven't had a chance to look at the offending pump but assume it has seized... anyone got any experience of these? do they go just like that?

I thought the belt also did the alternator? For the compressor to seize, you would have to have the compressor on , so the solenoid clutch engages, unless that has seized too. Maybe an alternator ( reknown failure of bearings) or an idler which has locked up. Either way, sadly its a strip out and inspect to find the fault .

A/c pump has seized solid may just be the clutch, not sure.

The clutch is just a magnetic engagement device. If the clutch is locked then the compressor will be permanently engaged, so will always be cooling. If it has seized, which it can do, then its off and scrap and replacement I'm afraid.

It's scrap.
Unfortunately I'm advised to fit a new dryer... which is incorporated into the condenser on the S-max.
More expense.

The drier absorbs moisture in the system and something most people overlook when opening an a/c system. It is good practice to change at the same time.
