Escort Air Con Pump
Discussion
Hello,
The Escort has developed a loud rattle with a strong clutch smell, I've taken the car to my local MOT garage and they say that the Air Con Pump is broken. They have recommended that I go to a local breakers yard and try to buy a used replacement.
I phoned up the local Ford main dealer and apparently I also need a pulley, oil and clutch assembly to go with this, all at the grand total of £1130.26.
Would the used pump be enough or do I really need the three other parts aswell?

I dont know a lot about this area but i think that price and items needed is mad.
A pump second hand on ebay is around £20 to £30 second hand and £250 new.
One issue i can think of,if there is still aircon gas in the system you should take it to a garage and have them fit it so they can de gas and fit it then re gas it.
Someone more clued up will give you a better answer though.

The compressor 'usually' comes with the engagement clutch fitted. The oil is something that may get flagged up when you buy a new compressor and you will probably need it. The tensioner is usually just an auxilary tensioner for the auxilary belt. If the belt has been smoking, it would be advisable to change that as well.
If you go down the route of a second hand compressor, remember that cleanliness is the same as building an engine. The worst thing you can get in a cooling system is dirt and moisture, so dont just get one off a shelf, that looks like it has been there for years. See if you can go to a breakers to remove one. Usually if the car has had a frontal impact, the condenser will burst and there will be no refrigerant in the system. Change the oil, while it is off.Always a bit iffy buying second hand, but the final decision is yours. Remember that if you open a system, to replace the drier , as this absorbs the moisture and dirt in the system. Good luck.

sounds like the compressors seized or has the belt just gone slack ? if it had seized it should have burnt the belt off so check that first. dont worry to much about gas yet as if it has lost some the power it takes to turn the pump drops off. i would take to a refrigeration a/c tech guy like me,ask him to have a look for his call out charge and go from there. might end up cheaper than buying all that lot if its not needed.
