Ford Ka gearbox issues

My girlfriend came to see me this weekend as I'm working away from home for two weeks. She drove he 02 plate ford Ka 340 miles down south (mainly motorway miles) and when she got here she said her clutch has become a bit stiff. I drove it yesterday for 5 minutes to check and right enough it was a bit heavier but nothing major. Fluids were all at correct levels etc.
She's currently driving home, and phoned me 10 mins ago to say she stopped at a service station 50 miles from home. Her gearknob is now seriously hot and she says she's struggling to get gears.
My first thoughts were slave cylinder but her fluid levels were fine yesterday. I've never come across a roasting hot gearknob before (no dirty jokes please)
Any ideas? could it just be that the little Ka is built for city driving and not Motorway driving and just needs to cool down?
