I'm under the impression that the headunit in my Focus ST-2 isn't a double DIN but something closer to a 1.6 DIN. Is this correct, and if so what decent headunit can I put in there that won't involve modifying the dash?
If you've replaced yours can you advise and maybe put a picture here?
I'd like one that is still able to be operated from the steering wheel.

ETA: I've been told a double DIN will fit.

^One of those would be for the original shape Focus, not the ST-2 the op has.

Try having a trawl though this page http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/install-adaptors-f...

it would appear you could go to double din or single. The kits on page two of the link appear to have the leads that would retain the other controls though from experience not all aftermarket units can accept them.

Worth having a chat with a professional ICE company to see what the limitations are these days (its been a decade since I left the audio industry, much has changed I'm sure).

After a bit of research I've sussed it and I'm getting one of these fitted:

Right, I've had the Sony unit in for a couple of days now and I must say I'm liking it a lot. The SatNav part is faultless being a TomTom, and the way you can just unplug the TT module (mine's stored in the glovebox) and take it inside to update on the computer is very simple. Excellent navigating too and even the text to speech is very clear.
Control of CDs, USB stick, tuner, bluetooth streaming from phone is great, as is the bluetooth handsfree calling which is clear as a bell.
The only thing I've not checked yet is the video operation.

Sounds great, though if I'm honest the two lines of spec that I focused on were;

"Fine tune your music to suit your vehicle with Centre Speaker Organiser, Intelligent Time Alignment and EQ7 graphic equalizer

3 x 4V pre-outs and low pass/high pass filters for ultimate system expandability"

Or translated;

"the unit will tune the system to sound good regardless of how much is added in the way of amplifier and speaker upgrades"

and

"you can go pretty mad with adding amplifier and speaker upgrades without worrying about how to feed the correct signals to them"

I miss the old audio days when Point of Reference and SPL competitions were more popular but one of the cars of the house is still kitted up with a lot of the audio gear I collated over the years & my father's DAF truck runs a nice budget set up with a Kenwood 12" sub supporting the Pioneer speakers he's got in the four corners of the cab - he's 62!
