I have a 1993 Ford EScort with the 1.3 CFI HCS engine. The most recent problem is that when the brake pedal is pressed or reverse gear is engaged, the fuel gauge drops to zero and the car starts to stutter and stall. Does anyone have any ideas?

Could you have an earth/shorting problem somewhere? Possibly in the rear light cluster or fuel tank sender unit area?

Its possible, but the car runs fine in forward gears. Its only when braking or in reverse that it stalls

I don't know precisely but what you could have is something where, the reverse light is fed off of a rear power feed, when you press the brake light, with both of them on together you could be draining the rear electrical circuit of power, cutting out the fuel pump in the tank (stuttering and stalling) and killing the sender fitted to the side of the pump.

Just an idea and something to think about.
