On a Mk 1 focus (1.6 petrol) what symptoms can you get if the PCV needs replacing?

Can it lead to excessive oil consumption? If so, where does the oil go - burnt or spat out?

bad idle and yes it can lead to excessive oil consumption. The breather pipes can also go really soft which blocks the breathers. New pipes and PCV will cure the running and transform the car too
