'99 Focus, can't open rear n/s door

Door has been like this a while now ever since the central locking packed up a few months ago.
Can't push the 'lock button' or use the interior handle to unlock the door either.
How would I go about fixing this, anyone else had the same issue?
Tempted to take a hammer to the button as no amount of prodding will make it budge.
