hi, hopefully someone can help me. im looking to buy a MONDEO ST TDCI,with 3 to £4000 to spend. i've seen a few that are hi mileage, one at 160000m on a 2007/56 plate full service history asking £2990. are the st known for any problems? and is it worth going for a hi mileage one even with the service history?

Hi.
With that sort of mileage on you might want to check if it has had a new dual mass flywheel, new clutch and new starter motor fitted at some point in its history. When the dual mass flywheel gives up, the starter motor usually ingests a load of swarf and dies as well. Listen for odd noises coming from the geabox with the car idling in neutral with your foot off the clutch. This can (but not always) be an indication that all is not right with the flywheel. It can also be the sound of an elderly moaning release bearing as well, but I think that the clutch has to come off to get to it anyway (someone correct me if I'm wrong please).

Check also that the fuel filter is new - mine blocked shortly after I bought my ST TDCi and stranded me on the motorway for a short while until the blockage moved and I could re-start the car and limp home.

Regular oil changes are important as is the need to keep on top of any rough running issues. The Mondeo injectors can fail and put too much fuel into a cylinder. If you ignore the problem and it gets worse, it can eventually lead to the cylinders over pressurising and this can subsequently end up wrecking the head and cam carrier - have seen this on a neglected Mondeo that had cracked the cam carrier posts. Its not pretty and not cheap either.

New injectors are, I understand, supposed to be coded to the cars ecu as well.

Despite the doom and gloom above, it is possible to buy a good high mileage example. It helps if you know the cars history personally and in all cases buy it with your eyes open.

Cheers

Marty
