Focus MK1 Computer Erratic

Hi,
I have a Focus 2.0 Ghia shed. W reg, mk 1. The computer changes from average mpg to instantaneous mpg to miles to empty, etc. of its own accord a lot of the time. Often this happens when slowing down to stationary.
Also, when I open the doors (with the key rather than the fob) the central locking takes a couple of seconds to open the rest of the doors. I have a suspicion the battery needs changing and the idle control valve needs a cleanup but any thoughts on what the root of the issue might be?
