TDCi fuel pump or pulley failure?

Wife's 2002 TDCi Focus broke down recently at 85k miles. AA man said fuel pump, but is there a chance it could be a pulley failure? The reason I ask is that for a few weeks on start-up for a couple of minutes there has been a squeaking noise from what I thought could be auxiliary belt. Also, if it is fuel pump, can anyone give me any advice - scrappy/refurbished/new and where from? Cheers

Did the AA man...

a) empty the contents of the fuel filter out to check for metal swarf?
b) check leak-off from the injectors?
c) check the fuel pressure actual?
d) check the maximum pressure obtainable from pump?

No, he did none of those things - but he did check key, fuses etc

If he hasn't carried out any structured diagnosis, then how can he prove the pump was at fault?

You need to find out whats up first sounds like Mr AA was just guessing.

Anyway if you need a pump done http://www.feather-diesel.co.uk/ they do a good job i presume they do car pumps.

Hi, thanks for your replies. Turns out it was a split hose giving 'pump-like symptoms' ie car would only run 1 or 2 seconds then stall. Relatively easy and cheap fix. Result!

split hose on the low pressure side of the pump, or a split pipe on the high pressure side? Saw a transit with a split high pressure hose the other day, and it has been nothing but trouble since

I think he probably means an air hose possibly from the turbo which seems to be a common fault on these.
