55 reg Focus auto box problem

Hi All,

I acquired a 55 reg Focus 1.6 Auto for not a lot of cash (thankfully!) but the gearbox seems fautly. I've read a few forums about people being told that the gearbox mostly needs replacing but I am skeptical. Is it often a software/electronics issue or the actual mechanical parts? On this car it accelerates to about 3000rpm and then changes up but also slows the car down.
