07 Focus with 2 issues.

Hi guys,
Having a little bit of trouble with my 2007 Focus 2.0 auto (50k miles).
Occasionally it will fail to start and the dashboard will light up like a Christmas tree. A swift blow to the dash with my fist will cure (or seems to) the problem and the car will start up.
I have removed the instrument cluster to check for loose connections/corrosion etc but cannot see anything amiss.
What could the issue be?
The second issue is when comming to a stop at traffic lights the car will 'clunk' into 1st gear as it changes from 3rd/4th/5th to 1st. It almost feels as if I have been bumped into from behind ever so slightly.
Any suggestions on what might be causing the problems?
