Transit 2nd gear problem
Discussion
I have a 2001 Transit 2.0 5 speed front wheel drive, recently it has started to have a problem going into 2nd gear & reverse. Basically when i put it into 2nd it feels like its gone in but then when i lift the clutch get the usual gear crunching sound so have to depress clutch & have another try, same with reverse feels like its in gear & same thing happens.
What i'm wondering is if there is any adjustment on the linkage or is it likely to just be worn linkage, gearbox oil is ok aswell.
Cheers Nebby

Access from above remained the gearbox mount for better access, you will see the selector unclip the selector cables then unbolt the selector & wiggle out, make sure in neutral makes refitting easier.
The bearings will need replacing they support the selector shaft & you will need to strip the selector down to change knock them out. also carefully check the condition of the bolt that holds the selectors together as these can snap also

Many thanks for your help.
After having another look at trying to sort the problem i was struggling a bit with trying to work out how the red clips came off the cables & also could not see that there was any significant play on the lever arm on top of the gearbox.
So i went to see my chap that does my mot's & repairs that i can't & indeed he said that it could be the bearing but there is a small amount of adjustment that can be done on the cables.
So home i came after booking the van in with him & done a bit more research, type in "how do you adjust gearbox cables on 02 transit" in yahoo or google and it will bring the page up (would put a link but i'm s**t with computers), had a read and from the description could not really see how this would adjust the cables because its just unclipping, moving the lever then reclipping but glad to report it's worked.
From the way the gears were working quite suprised it's done the job & i guess it's what my mot man was referring too.
Not sure if it might work on other models with same sort of setup but worth a look.
Thanks again
