Been fixing up an old Puma the past few days. Replaced knackered old brake pipe this afternoon and went to bleed it off and snapped the bloody nipple clean off the caliper (didn't think it was that rusty, how wrong was I!)

I've been told that I can just bleed from the hose and leave it in situ, rather than replace the caliper - I've never had this happen before so I have no idea whether that's ok, can someone enlighten me?

Cheers

If the pipe-to-calliper union is high up, then yes you probably can bleed there.

Otherwise take the calliper off so that the union IS highest. While its off, push the pistons back in and wedge with a wood block to minimise the liquid / air volume inside the cal.

I know it's no help to you now, but before unscrewing old bleed nipples, get a deep 1/4 drive socket that will fit over the nipple and rest on the hex. Using a small hammer give it a few light taps to release corrosion in the threads whilst spraying plus gas or similar into the threads. It's the safest way to hopefully ensure they don't snap on you.
