Hi all, contemplating changing the timing belt on a 1.25 Zetec. Why does one have to mess about with locking bolts and loosening of crankshaft pulley/camshafts ? On other belts I've done, you just locate TDC remove tension on tensioner then replace belt like for like. Apply tension, then it's done ?! Do you really have to loosen crank pulley bolt ? Thanks in anticipation.

You can't get the belt off without removing the crankshaft pully, hence the bolt needs to be removed. When the crankshaft pulley bolt is removed the timing belt pulley is then free to rotate on the crankshaft as it's not keyed. You're going to need to do it properly.

Locking kits ar about £15, best fit a new cam cover gasket as it will have to come off to lock the cams and they usually leak into the plug wells after if not changed smile

I've got an 06 reg Fiesta 1.2. with 40k on from new. I'm thinking of doing the belt and water pump a year early as I'll have to do it anyway and I might go to Italy in it this summer.

If I buy the correct timing kit, it it a straightforward job for a DIY'er?

Thanks smile
