Can someone on here help me please, I have a friend who's 1.6 16v Zetec is idling all over the place. It's on a P reg, on the airbox it has 66hp. I have removed and cleaned the throttle body. There are no obvious air leaks, as this would cause a fast idle, I believe that mine is too low, as if I take the revs up slightly its ok. I noticed on roadtest that the temp guage didn't go up at all, would this have an affect on it. Is there anything that needs shorting out so that I can set base idle speed, any advice greatly appreciated.

I'd say there's the possibility of a couple of problems there

Temp gauge - likely to be thermostat. Does the rad get warm?

Idling - more than likely MAF sensor or TPS, is it using a load of fuel?

Just to the right hand side front of the engine is a breather box the valve in these were prone to playing up clamp the breather pipe to test if the valve is faulty, iscv faults were common and the breather pipe on the back of the engine that connects to the valve in the breather box.The intake temperature sensor could be faulty if its just got worse in the cold weather, correct oil grade is also very important on those engines as it affects valve train operation(5w30).

Thanks Jon, At the weekend I clamped the pipe that runs from the manifold, under the coil pack to the block/ valve at the right hand front as you look at it, the car then cut out. I was checking for air leaks, should the car stall if this pipe is clamped ?
