A neighbour has just come round and asked me if I knew what is wrong with his Galaxy.
His wife was in it when there was a loud band from the back of the vehicle. Straight after that, the whold car was vibrating when in drive or park. But not neutral. Its an auto you see.

Does anyone know what it could be? I assume its a belt or something gone in the auto box, but thats just a guess. I know bugger all about auto boxes. Not sure what the loud bang from the back was all about though. Buit the car does vibrate like a mutha when in drive. The vibration is accompanied by a loud'ish hum confused

Any help appreciated.

A loud bang from the rear?

Auto box is at the front.
I would guess that something in the box has come adrift or a nut come loose on the end of the shaft.

Did she by any chance put it in P while driving?

Don't know. I don't think she'd say if she did anyway.
I had a look underneath last night, and when he put it in drive, the whole exhaust system moved forward about 3-4 inches. Then back again when he took it out of drive. But maybe they all do that, as engines do have a certain amount of movement.

All she said was that there was a loud bang from the rear. Almost like the car had been hit from the rear. Apparently. But then women aren't the best at describing mechanical faults at the best of times hehe

Any ideas?

Nope. Tyres all ok.

The car DOES vibrate badly even when stationary, but in any gear but neutral.

I'd just be guessing as to what the problem is.

My guess is that there is a problem with the Park paw and ratchet within the box.

While driving the car (with or without driver assistance) has selected park.

This would have stripped the teeth off of the park ratchet within the box and the vibs you now get in park are caused by the paw tring to engage in the completely ed rachet.

There MAY be an external linkage problem which caused the original failure and now even when you engade D the pank is still engaged. but I fear this all sounds expensive IMHO?

Similiarly dont know anything about autos, but first thoughts was could it be just the exhaust or one of the clamps. maybe just vibrating like something not wise possibly explaining the exhaust moving. I know that if the exhast just as much as touches or come close to the car it sounds like the worlds ending inside the car

Wasnt there a recall on this? I'm sure its related to the flywheel popping. Have a look at the VOSA site for recalls under Galaxy
