Rough running focus mk1. Can anyone help?
Discussion
Hi guys, I was wondering if one of you could offer any advice. I have a 1999 Focus mk1 with the 1.8 petrol engine and manual transmision. Recently, the engine has started to play up. The revs will rise when I put the car into neutral when coasting to a stop and occasionally in between downshifts too. The revs will usually rise to about 1700-2000 rpm and settle back down when the car comes to a complete stop. The idle can be lumpy at times too. Both problems are intermitent and come and go every so often while I'm driving. The car has had a full service a few weeks ago and has full ford history too, so I doubt it's due to a lack of maintanence.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Take the idle control valve off and give it a good clean with carb cleaner to eliminate that as a possibility. They can get gummed up and start sticking producing the same symptoms as you are seeing. I had to do the one on our old 98 v6 mondeo twice.
