I'm thinking of getting a ST220 estate when the nail goes back.

The one I am looking at is an estate in Blue with Xenon's, 6 speed box etc. on a 53 plate

This has full service history with about 66k miles on.

What things should I be aware of when running this car?
Are tyres / servicing sensible prices?

What about the dreaded mpg. are they capable of 30mpg on a run?

Thanks for that GR.

How are they on clutches?

The one I am thinking about has had the clutch changed quite a few times.

Also it is currently in need of exhaust & tyres.

What is the best exhaust to get?

Good choice. Blue is the best colour if you pair it with the light grey leather. I have silver with red leather.

It's heavy on tyres as you might expect of any torquey front-wheel-drive car. Servicing is very reasonable.

I think you're very unlikey to see 30 MPG unless you drive almost solely on motorways. I do mainly urban driving and my average economy is 21 MPG.

At that mileage check whether it has had the spark plug service done - thats the only slightly pricey service interval I know of (6 platinum plugs, and the back 3 are a pig to get to) Apart from that it has standard Mondeo brakes, oil etc, so shouldn't really be any more pricey to service than a standard Ford. No cambelt to worry about either.

I'll be going for a nice set of Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics for mine soon - £105 per corner if you shop around online.

Fuel consumption wise I get about 26mpg on my mainly motorway commute. Longer motorway journeys where I've kept the speed down I've had it up to about 29. To get up to 35 I need to slipstream a truck at 56mph.

Standard exhaust is stainless I think? So if you want a cheep one buy off someone who has upgraded theirs.

Silver with red leather is the best colour. Most of the blue ones are dieselswink

I dunno what's what nowadays, but 3-4 years ago when I was looking around for alternative exhausts, Powerflow were the bunnies to have. Largely because they can tailor it to how you want it. Quiet, loud, wuffly, rorty etc. The standard one is pretty good though, quiet when you want it to be, and RAAAR when you want to press on a bit.

Look out for RUST, yes RUST on door bottoms etc-it's a KNOWN concern on certain build dates. 30MPG should be do-able on a run but you don't buy a 3L V6 to pootle along do you? Mine is showing 26MPG DRIVEN. Servicing-cheap as chips-first service was £80 which included £5 for body inspection to keep the paint warranty!! Tyres-i'd rather walk than drive a 220 with £60 King Pin remoulds-budget £120 a corner. DMF & clutch can cause problems but i'd say it's more down to abuse than any design problem-slip a clutch on a DMF car and it will go pop.

I have been told it needs tyres & exhaust by the current owner of the car (My Mother)

Trying to convince the wife it is a good idea at the moment hence the 30mpg question biggrin

I'd say 26-28 if its a bit more thirsty than the 2.5, the trouble is, when you put your foot down they make a sound like this.

It shouldn't need an exhaust - so I'd check into that and see what's wrong with it - perhaps one of the joins has gone or something.

I've just paid £460 for four tyres, £115 a corner for Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetrics which are so far fantastic!
I know a few people with the 220 and they seem to get about 26/27mpg average. Easily get 30mpg on a long run I guess - a friend's ST200 will get 35ish on a long motorway jaunt.

BTW the standard exhaust is stainless but there are different grades-it should last much longer than a standard mild steel system though..........
