ST220 Engine trouble
Discussion
Glorious day here yesterday and a day off(!!) so took the 220 out for a drive. When i got back i noticed a loud ticking noise when parking it in the garage . Flipped the bonnet and it sounded like it was coming from right under the UIM, here's a short vid of it :-

You could easily hear it from outside the car and with the bonnet up it sounded awful.
Started it this morning and it's silent but i'm sure the engine is vibrating more than it used to-that maybe just my imagination though!!
I plan to take it out tonight and see if it does it again when hot, thoughts?
I've heard a noise like this before and it was a new engine job!!!!!!!!

Get it to a garage - avoid driving it would be my vote.
Yeah i've emailed a couple of garages, i've got a dealer 2 miles away but i wouldn't touch them with a s
tty stick!! (had far too many problems with them in the past). If the engine is fubar surely that will be a record?!! Dave_ST220 said:

I wonder if it is the engine will they want to fit some recon unit? I'd want bloody brand new but i bet what with Ford being Ford that will never happen.
I dunno, one decent run around Wales(and not even driving quickly i may add-Mrs & 9 month old baby on board) and it's knocking like a diesel!!

Big end bearings come to mind, but wouldn't the noise have come from the bottom of the engine?
How many miles has it done Dave? Drum_dudes bottom end went at 9k.
That is the worrying thing-the noise comes from the top(which is what mine is doing) when these fail as the noise you hear is the piston kissing the valve! However what i don't know is if it would do that all the time, ie, when cold. As above, 1300 miles!!!How many miles has it done Dave? Drum_dudes bottom end went at 9k.
The first thing I used to do with our 2.5 v6 when it made any odd noises was to pull the aux belt off to ensure that it wasn't caused by the alternator, air con pump, steering pump, idler wheels etc... for our it was always one of those. The alternator bearings failed once and it sounded extremely terminal. However as it's under warrenty I'd just take it in.

Serious question - how often do you check oil..?
Before evrey drive m8, i even checked it again when i got in and it hasn't budged. I even keep a litre(or half) in the little strap next to the sat nav!Found an interesting TSB for a similar engine :-
Subject/Concern:
Ticking noise from the engine at normal operating temperature
Model:
Maverick 2001 (12/2000–)
Engine: 3.0L Duratec-VE (VE6)
Markets:
All
Section:
303-01B
Summary
Should a customer express concern about ticking noise from the engine at normal operating temperature, the probable cause is the left-hand bank intake camshaft bearing caps.
To diagnose, with the engine running and warm, use a pry bar against the belt tensioner to increase and decrease tension on the coolant pump belt. If the noise changes, remove and install the left-hand bank intake camshaft bearing caps.

2. NOTE: Number six cylinder is at the coolant pump back end (marked as "9L" in the following figure).
Rotate the engine clockwise until the cam lobes of number six cylinder are pointing up.
3. NOTE: The camshaft bearing caps must be completeley removed and installed and then set back into position. Loosening and re-torquing of the camshaft bearing caps is not sufficient.
NOTE: Tightening sequence.
Remove and install all camshaft bearing caps.
Tighten the camshaft bearing cap screws in the sequence shown to 8 Nm.
4. NOTE: Use silicone gasket sealant (WSE-M4G323-A4) (see Parts Required).
Install the left-hand valve cover. For additional information, refer to Maverick 2001 Workshop Manual Section 303-01B, Valve Cover LH.

It is very difficult to take much from the sound on that VID, but it is usually symptomatic of a bent rod when you get a light 'tappety' sound in one of those 5 pot Volvo engines. That damage is usually caused by a spike of boost at low engine revs which will usually do the damage even before ignition.
Have you had any changes made that might have caused a spike of boost low down?
Regards, Don.

Hi Dave,
don't mean to put a downer on things but as far as I'm aware that TSB refers to a much quieter ticking noise caused by the camshaft bearing caps, where as yours is more of a knock.
Every ST220 I've looked at suffers from the same ticking noise, if you follow this link to youtube you will be able to hear it when the engine idles...(at about 19 seconds)

Sounds a bit like diesel clatter. I think the cause of your problem could be something worse, but I hope I am wrong.
Only time will tell, but i've been told Ford fit recon engines for warranty work in which case they can fdon't mean to put a downer on things but as far as I'm aware that TSB refers to a much quieter ticking noise caused by the camshaft bearing caps, where as yours is more of a knock.

k right off! No way i am having a recon engine for one that has failed at 1300 miles. Dealer i am using thinks it's a chain tensioner problem. Hopefully i can get it to them this week.don kalmar union said:
My apologies Dave, my knowledge of Fords is not great at all....just prompted by the ST220!
Certainly not a bent rod then.....
Regards, Don.
Still could be as the Duratec is prone to spun bearing causing valve kiss Certainly not a bent rod then.....
Regards, Don.
Whether that can happen on a 1300 mile engine remains to be seen...........Gassing Station | Ford | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
