Going to use this as a tow car. Seems to be a nice piece of kit. Some signs of rust in tyre well but nothing to make me run for the hills. Rust spots at rear door sill edges, again not a worry. Hatchback door fit is slightly off, as in shut lines are lower on one side than the other, you have to look to see it and no water ingress visible.

Any other things I should look for?

BTW, It's the first Ford I've owned.

Good cars, just look out for front lower arms wearing, wondering steering will be the symptom, otherwise good cars

Just about to buy a V reg Zetec one. Lovely condition with 70k.

Watch for leaky alloys, and rust near the bottom of the rear arches. Piccies?

Cam Belt..

Change it asap regardless of what the history says, for peace of mind.

I've noticed water temps show low, and the tickover is slightly high at 1000 rpm instead of 800 rpm. After thrapping car to get water temps up, the tickover revs go down. Just had a cold snap which has sent water temps plummeting. Car sits at 1500 revs on gear change then idles at 1000 revs.

Changing the thermostat looks like it might fix this. Any thoughts? Next on the hit list is the idle control valve, but I always look at problems from the simple end up.

800 is quite low isn't it? My Dad's is at about 950 and my Fiesta says 875 +/- 50.

I beleive the EGR valave holds the revs up on gear changes to make them smoother, have you actually used a calibrated rev counter or just read from the dash instruments?

I've just changed the thermostat, temp gauge comes up much higher, much quicker to the upright position. Still seems to be idling at 1000. This is using the dash rev counter. I'm thinking of swapping out the coolant temp sensor on the thermostat that speaks to the ECU.

IACV?

Mine had some idling issues and it turned out that it just needed a quick clean with some carb cleaner!
