First of all hello to the forum, and thank you to anyone taking the time to read my post.

I have a 1996 1.6 16v zetec SEFI Ford escort and as you can probably gather by the title im having a problem with the fuel pump.

With ignition on engine off fuel pump runs continuously and also when checking for fault codes I am getting a fault code 556 which is fuel pump circuit.

Does anyone know what might be causing this? I thought it might be the fuel pump relay so I swapped the relay with one of the other matching relays and it has made no difference to the issue.

Car seems to run fine despite this but it’s still a concern.

Any ideas?

Does the engine carry on running as well? It could be the diode in the engine fusebox. Open the bonnet, front right as you're looking at it. It's a small black almost mini blade fuse sized thing

Failing that, fuel pump relay has gone wonky - are you sure you swapped like for like?

Hi andy engine seems to run fine, its just the fuel pump is constantly running and never stops after a few seconds as it should.

Defo swapped like for like, fuel pump and headlight relays are both the brown one

Try changing the diode in the fusebox. Does anything else weird happen, other electrics not working as they should?

On my XR2 (Zetec transplant) the engine sometimes runs on and can carry on running with the key taken out of the ignition. The brake pedal usually turns it off. Similar issue, it needs a diode adding to the loom - could be that yours has gone bad
