I am looking to purchase probably a 2004 or 2005 Mondeo ST220 with approximately 50k on the clock.

Is there anything I should particularly look for on these cars - you know what I mean - the things that Ford would rather peopole did not know !

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Watch for a dropping rear bumper and rust on the bottom of the door.

They're quite sensitive to tracking, so make sure it has decent tyres and the alloys aren't kurbed to buggery.

Check the service history for regular servicing and oil changes - other than that, Dave_ST220 will be along at some point to add anything I've missed.

I've had an ST220 (03 reg, 5 speed) for 18 months and in that time done about 25k miles (now at £74k miles) and its hardly had anything go wrong. The work its had to date is as follows:

Rear subrame replaced (only needed bushes but it worked out cheaper to have the entire thing replaced)
Discs and pads all round (£210 from indie garage)
2 x Services (approx £120 each, both at Ford main dealers)
Air con recharge (£49 from quick fit)
4 x tyres (£400, Verdestein...sh * t!)
4 x tyres + nitrogen fill + 4 wheel align (£570 but got Goodyear eagle F1 Asymetric, transformed car!!!!)
Fix water getting onto part of throttle loom causing high idle (£50, indie garage)
Idle control valve (common part to go £70, indie garage)

Thats everything the car has cost me (apart from fuel).

Its a great motorway cruiser, fund on A and B roads and even though its not the most economical for its size and speed it isnt that bad. Mines sitting at 26.8mpg at the moment but I do a fair bit of motorway driving. If I fill up with BP fuel (cost £55 from empty other day) I can get about 250-300 miles out of it.

Hope that helps...

p.s. Saloon looks waaaaaaaay better IMO. Ive got black saloon.

saloons do look the part wink As Podie has said on that era there was an issue with the rear bumper dropping & cracking and also the clinched flange protection can fail causing rusty door bottoms!

When looking at the 220 not really much to look for. As mentioned check the bumpers for dropping there has been a TSB released for these but only if in warranty. You are looking at the facelift car so no real need to worry about DMF/Clutch/Starter motor issues, just check all the electrics work, and get as many options as you can. Dont get hung up on the Xenons though they are pretty bad compared to rivals. Finally enjoy that V6 roar.
