Last friday i became the proud owner of the new focus zetec S after wait for nearly a month past the agreed collection date, this is only the start of my bad luck.

As most of you already know (if youve read the review on it) its fitted with the new 115ps 1.6 ,125ps 1.8 and 145ps 2.0 TI-VCT units, the new ST style body kit, 17" alloys wrapped in sport continental rubber 205.50.17s, ST pedals (which are very good if the bottom of you feet are dry, but if not...sssslip..) , ST style handbrake and ........ wait for it ..... the new exclusive S badge on the boot lid and on each front wing which i must admit look very cool, the problem is mine was delivered already de-badged apart from the word focus on the boot, not even the word zetec in sight. This upset me a little, why the hell advertise a new and exclusive item if YOU AINT GONNA FIT IT ARRRGGGHH... how anoying. I thought oh well its a beutiful looking car as you can see by the smile on my face i really like it.

Anyway back to the bad luck, i came out of my house at about 21:00hrs a few nights back and saw my lights on, i last parked about 16:00hrs just as it was getting dark. I opened her up and noticed that there was no audio beep to alert me about my lights, where as it was working befor hand. so i booked her in for monday nxt wk, still undetered by all this because she drives great and handles even better but BELIEVE IT OR NOT IT GETS F*@KIN WORSE..

Ive been taking it easy for the first 500miles, keeping it below 3000rpm and going no faster than 65mph on the motorway to ease her in slowly so naturaly, now i want see what 4000/5000rpms feals like so today was the day,i pulled up to lights at the emerald chinese buffet in longbrige and my first traffic light derby was on... my heart beating slightly faster than usual due to the adrenaline starting to seap into my vaines, i looked across at my fist victim ..the classic boy racer ,need for speed style corsa. I turned off the traction control and into 1st, set her up at 2500rpm, the lights turned amber and i was off whaaaaaaaaaaaaarp into 2nd at about 5k, it felt great, a real smooth shift with no power loss in between gears, whaaaaaaaaaaaaarp into 3rd at 5k and crrrrunch.... My smile was now a frown as i eased of the gas and watch that f*@kin corsa fly by.

My thoughts were in my driving error so i slowed down (safely) and off i went again whaaaaaaarp 5k, clutch flat to the floor shift to 3rd and crrrrunch, not a happy chappy. I tried a 3rd time with the same result so now im a little dissapointed to say the least. question... Is this down to being new and never bin gear shifted at higher rpms before. Also has anyone else bought the new focus zetec S and if so have you experienced the same. well sorry to bore you guys but thanks for reading about my misfortune hehe. let me now your thoughts please as advice would be great. thanks in advance..DOG..

Sounds like maybe the clutch is dragging slightly due to poor adjustment. Are they hydraulic on these Focuses? Either way, it would lead to premature wear.

I've had my ST since May (2,300 miles on the clock now)and have not taken it over 4k yet yikes

Because I'm not a fan of FWD, I don't drive it like a sports car.

Can't give any advice on the Gearbox, I must admit I'm not overly impressed with the ST's 6 Speed one, tends to sound a bit mechanical, clonky & jolty from cold.

It shouldn't crunch gears though.

i payed £16000 for it, i had all extras apart for the keyless start which seam a little pointless. Its a cable operated clutch, hopfully it is just poor adjustment but if feals like its lost the sync on the gear but then again it mainly happens above 3000rpms. even today i was putting it down to driving error but after crunch number 30 i ruled it out. my new car is a shed.

Not sure really.

Was under pressure to change it as the old Supra was leaking oil on the drive. Was considering an MGZT260, but weren't many around, and would be wallopped for the higher tax band. Also was considering a Monaro, but again the tax and reliability issues with disc brakes and parts availability steered me away from that.
There was nothing else vaguely interesting in other manufacturers ranges in that price bracket unless you went a lot older.

Nosing around Car Craft at Lakeside and they had an ST (My Brother raves about his one), had a look at it but they wanted silly money for it. Just dropped into the Ford Dealer on the way home out of interest and saw a year old ST, but for the price they wanted my Father could get a new one on Ford Discount for about £700 more.

I was so fed up with looking around at poor second hand cars, and dodgy dealers, I decided to get it as there was nothing else around.

Don't get me wrong it's not a bad car, just a tad uninteresting. If you have been brought up on hot hatches you would probably love it, coming from a background of RWD Coupes it is not what I am used to.

Surely, once it's over 4,000rpm that it starts to get interesting? Havent you been tempted to give it a good ragging? Even once?

hmm, you do realise that every car made is ragged to death on the dyno at the factory?(& no doubt at the docks when they arrive and dealer PDI.......) I'm all for bedding things in for a couple of hundred miles but there is a school of thought that says warm it up and drive it hard from day 1. I can't see any reason why a modern car would need to be nursed after that many miles.

correction to my previous post, its hydraulic driven clutch. Dave ST all to true but i myself am a huge believer in bedding them in but to be fair it seems to work against me so my nxt new car im gonna drive it like i stole it from day 1.

Anyway i took it bak to ford and they sorted electrics and they are saying i need to rebook on the 29th to change the sync mesh on 3rd...whaaaaat... i want a new gear box surley. All i keep thinking about is little bits of toughned steel shavings running around my gear box, but on the other hand a buddy of mine said instantly after hearing the symptoms "its the hydraulic clutch" and he knows what hes talking about so ford may be pissing up the wrong tree.

Any advice of anyone that has been i a similar sicho, im not sure weather to play my face or to let them get on with it???????? what you recon guys, thanks in advance. Dog.

If it's the clutch surely it would crunch in every gear? Ford will pay lots of money to have lots of parts fitted rather than swap out a whole unit-my 220 had a new cylinder head @ 1400 miles, a m8 of mine works at Ford and got me the warranty report-the parts list fills a side of A4!! You'd think they would just swap the whole engine out and gte it back to the factory but no. Anyway, hope you get it sorted, i know what it feels like when your new car needs major work! To be fair, i've got a two year extended warranty and the next two services FOC thanks to my troubles.

i would still recomend it to anyone because it really is a pleasure to drive (if you change from 2nd to 4th gear that is hehe.). i used to drive the new mini cooper which handled awsome, but my own opinion is my focus handles better. "f@*k off" you may say, my reply is go test drive both vehicals, either 1 will giv you a smile from ear to ear but theres somthin about the focus, truly excellent.

thanks for your replys and compliments, happy xmas and new year to all...Dog...

nice motor dog,
i had a similar problem after i changed the clutch and flywheel in my mk1 diesel, my problem was that the gear selector cables wernt properly adjusted so mine when cold would never go into second, a quick fiddle and all was fine, you never know fords might have a look at it but either way make them sort it, personally im a right arse and would take it back tell them to give me a car and ill be back in 2 days for my brand new motor rather than wait till 29th, always busy these main dealers even during a recession, amazing that lol

A very nice car, I dont know if i'd have picked that colour personally but as long as you like it!

I have a 57-plate Focus 2.0 TDCI Ghia in Aquarius Blue, got the leather interior, tinted windows, 17" alloys and electric & heated seats and rear parking sensors. It used to be a company car for a guy who worked at Ford HQ so I guess he spec'd it to the max!

Hope you get the gear selection issue sorted quickly.
