Well time has come.... I enquired only a week or so ago about an ST170... Unfortunately being forced to change my job now means I have one heck of a commute every day, which means a diesel!

Only have a budget of about £3250 so know I won't get anything overly special but the Mondeo seems to be coming in about right.

Any opinions or experience of the above car? Is it worth going for the 130 over the 115? Anything to keep an eye out for?

Be about a 03 Plate with roughly 70,000 on looking at Auto Trader.

Thanks in advance!

I used to have a 54 plate 130 TDCi and thought it was a cracking car. It's not going to set the world alight, but its quick enough for everyday use (plus you can have it chipped if you like).

I think the Mondeo got a facelift/update around 2004, which made the interior a nicer place to be, and if you get a ghia you get a nice 6 slot sony cd autochanger.

I'm sure some people can advise you on other things, like when it changed for a 5 speed to a 6 speed box, and also some of the engine related problems, but I never had any.

Thanks are your reply.

Just needs to be a motorway cruiser now.. Looking at over 100 Mile aday round commute on the M62 so.. I'd even consider an Auto!

The choice is vast I'v seen! So far decided it will be a 130bhp (Unless anyone has any horror stories) and it needs cruise control. Unfortuntely my knowledge on Mondeos is not that vast...

Cruise control was fitted on most Mondeos, toward the end of that generation all except the 90bhp LX. So that should not be a problem.

Range goes:

LX
Zetec
Zetec S (was discontinued about the time the Titanium was introduced IIRC)
Ghia
Titanium
Ghia X
Titanium X
ST versions (In some ways, these are lower specced than the Ghia X)

They are all fairly well specced, but an early 130 TDCI Ghia X would make a comfy car with lots of toys. Heated/air con seats, powered seats, heated front/rear windows & mirrors & washer jets, the list goes on and on.

The Zetec S is quite smart looking in black, a kind of halfway ST.

Get a facelift one if you can, MPG is slightly better, the centre console had a makeover, the rear lights have clear indicators and it's 6 speed. Engines are the same, and yes - the 130 is preferable over the 115

There are some boot rebadged 52 plate TDDI's kicking around at that age, they are more reliable WRT injector problems but all will have a question mark over the flywheel.

Smart looking car.

I had a TDCi Ghia (auto) and it had everything you'd need. All you lost from the Ghia X was leather seats and the power operation of the seats. You still get all the other toys....climate, all round electric windows, cd autochanger, cruise etc etc.

I liked the auto, but I think it knocks a good 5-10mpg off your economy, which isnt the best.
