It appears that some heavy braking proved too much for one of my front wheel bearings and its making a very nasty noise!

Ford have quoted me £130-140 which includes VAT, the part and labour. Does this sound about right?

Cheers

Local garage has quoted me £110, I think I'd rather pay more at Ford who will use a genuine part.

Have to say that doesnt seem like a main dealer, to be honest its not really worth doing it yourself for that price

This dealer has always gave me good servicing prices, £55 for an oil change, £25 for steering fix and iirc £120 for a service.

Dealer is "Hill & Swift" on the A34 in Staffordshire.

Gary would you recommend them for a second year service? Dealers around here are st(in so much that ALL have damaged my car in some way in the past & it is REALLY beginning to piss me off!). All i want is a Ford dealer who can service my car without denting a door, scratching a spoiler on ramps or scratching a wheel-not much to ask is it?

Hi Dave, in fairness yes I would. It's a small dealer and they can only fit 3 new cars in the show room or 3 in the garage at once, and with 2 major Ford dealers either side of them (Stafford & Stoke) I think its a case of having to remain friendly and competetitive in order to survive.

I plan to have my 75k service done there very soon, in addition to having the gearbox oil & PAS fluid changed - but that will be in about 2 months time.

Gary, I buy the parts from Ford and get my local man to fit them. That way I'm using the genuine parts, and getting the job done properly.

Like Dave, I've had to much grief with Ford garages in the past. The ONLY one that never gave me any grief was RT Rates in Thurrock.

Cheers, i may give them a try, although as my next two services are FOC i may hunt down the most expensive dealer in the UK biggrin

Rates looked after my ST200 when I lived down in Essex. Was nice to see catches being greased without asking or having to pay extra. Prices were sensible, but note I was working for FMC at the time so got parts discount.

They even advised me to have the alternator done at RapidFit next door as it was a simple job and the labour rate was cheaper.

I use to do that but have moved house, when I lived in Liverpool I had to do a 30 mile round trip to find a decent dealer.

P.S. Hows your mate with the estate, has he sorted his engine problem yet?

Was on the blower to him the other day. He'd ordered the parts and was going to collect them yesterday. He was hoping it'd solve the problem, then he wanted a remap.

Have you seen "the work"..?

the work? and I don't know what bits he's ordered. He said it was awful slower, and that an ST170 was faster! laugh

Piece of crap Ford laugh

He was telling me about DS, he said they seem to think you get a big increase on the ST220. I just can't see it giving 20bhp, let us know how he gets on :-)

Email from DS :-

"Hi Dave

I have attached an example of an ST220 using super unleaded fuel, the stock run was around 222Bhp and the run with the tune called Race 97 was around 244 mark at peak power so a good improvement. This was on the same car that’s on the website just before the modifications. The ST220 STRATAGEM also increases the acceleration of the car by editing torque tables used in 1st and 2nd gear so it will feel a lot faster on pick up too."

Ford's own test data :-

Reading the development report for the 220 seems they used many ECU calibrations to get what they wanted, in other words, no way on earth some bod with a dyno would get 20BHP from the standard car.

I've heard some owners say they can't feel any difference which would back that thought up.

I wasn't aware that the ST220 had torque restrictions, but I do remember reading a chaps post on this forum who claimed to help develop the mapping for the ST220 and he listed a handful of variables that could be changed - none of which would yield results of 7-10BHP never mind 20!

Torque limiter in first and second IIRC.

In that case it could be worth having a live remap to reduce the limit or get rid of it all together, less torque = less bhp, etc. More torque in 2nd gear would be noticable, reading the comments on the Dreamscience forum; some members have said it has had a big increase.

Dave may be able to produce the data... he seems to collate info hehe

DS or BF both remove the limiters AFAIK, so may well be a cheaper option than a Unichip (for example).

6 speed 'box is rated at 400NM IIRC, not sure about the rest of the drivetrain though. Typical Ford behaviour to improve traction in first / second. Second would certainly benefit yes
