Hi everyone, I have a fiesta 1.25 zetec (1997) which is having a few problems, it drives fine and actually goes like the clappers but sometimes when you start from cold it seems to give an occasional cough/missfire and when you drive it all is fine until you floor the throttle in a lower gear the engine seems to hit a brick wall and sort of holds back,it doeasn't do it when you floor the throttle in a higher gear for some reason, it is a well serviced car with low mileage and the problem is driving me crazy, are there any experts or ford techies out there who can help me please?
Cheers.....Tony..

Are you sure your not hitting the rev limiter, its not the same as most other cars as its not a redline as such, it will just hold the revs in such a way not to damage the Engine. As for the cold starting, I have no idea hehe.

Thanks for the reply Garry, it's not the rev limiter that's doing it although it feels the same I guess.

couple of things you could try see if it has an automatic choke and if so try give it a really good clean with a carb clean also clean the idle control valve, there is also a common fault on the coil packs with fords i had a zetec s that seem to have a misfire but not at any given rev range gear or speed it just come and go traced it back to the coil pack. I also know someone who is a ford mechanic who has a focus and always drives round with a spare coil pack in his glove box cos they are so common to go. I have a spare one you can try if your local to me im by junction 26 of m25 if not pattern part is bout £45

hope this help

Thanks for the tip Marcus, I had thought of the coil pack but when it went on my wifes focus the car just refused to start at all, might be worth a try though.

First things I'd be looking for would be fuel filter partially blocked, dirt/water in fuel tank and bad connection on engine earth strap.

i had the same problem on my fiesta 1.25 many years ago.

sounds like the coil pack. un screw the coil pack and have a look underneath it where the clear(ish) jelly stuff is. if you see some grey cloudy bits or grey scarring the coil pack needs replacing.

i actually ended up replacing the spark plugs, leads and coil pack.

plugs should be replaced at 40K.. and usually aren't.

Thanks for all your help guys, the car is now sold, the new owner knows of the problem and is aware of how to cure it, thanks again.
