Afternoon all.

I need some help diagnosing my wobbly rear; 40,000 mile `04 plate Mondeo estate TDCi. On bumpy roundabouts/right hand bends, the rear skips out, I can hear and feel a resonance over bumps and it just doesn`t handle any more - feels like a wallowy ship.

It`s just been serviced and MoTd by my very trusted favourite independant who were instructed to have a bloody good look for anything loose or broken, but nothing showed up. It`s got a very genuine ticket, but feels all wrong.

I heard the plastic arb links can break, but they`re good; the shocks aren`t leaking and seem to quell bounce well enough when I bounce the corner; rear tyres are wearing perfectly evenly. I wonder if it is a dodgy shock or could it be something to do with the self-levelling system. Not sure if self-levelling gubbins is contained within the shock though.

ALSO, the front tyres wore badly on the insides, yet the tracking was spot-on. I don`t expect any suspension parts to have worn much in it`s 40k, so I`m a bit stumped. Hope the car isn`t bent.

I quite fancy changing the shocks myself, both for the satisfaction and cost saving, but don`t want to do it unnecessarily if the fault is elsewhere.

Any help or advise greatly received!
Cheers!

Could be two things... Bushes or Bearings

If it does turn out to be rear subframe bushes (and they're a known weak point on the Mk3) you can get a polybush kit for them instead of standard Ford rubber ones, which need glueing in for some reason

Hi Chaps/esses.
Just for the sake of tying up loose ends and the possibility someone else might have the same query in the future, it was just the shocks. The car didn`t continue to bounce noticeably when I jumped up and down on the rear and the mechanic described them as "a little soft" - it had just got a fresh MOT - but we chose to replace them as there was no sign of damage/wear anywhere else on the rear. What a revelation; the back end is now as sharp and controlled as it ever was.

Many thanks to those who responded. Cheers!
